Reconstructing the unseen: understanding fire-damaged concrete structures

What really happens inside a reinforced concrete building after a major fire? And how can engineers tell whether a column that looks intact is actually one step away from collapse? Our paper, published in Proceedings of the Institution of Civil Engineers – Forensic Engineering, addresses these questions through a combined experimental and computational approach, integrating laser scanning, material diagnostics, CFD fire simulations, and finite-element modelling.

Integrated Structural and Thermal Retrofitting of Masonry Walls: New Insights from TRM-Based Solutions

Most of Europe’s masonry buildings were constructed long before modern seismic codes and energy-efficiency standards. As a result, they are highly vulnerable to earthquakes and contribute significantly to energy consumption and carbon emissions. Retrofitting these structures is therefore a dual challenge: we must improve their seismic performance while also enhancing their thermal efficiency.

Call for Papers: Special Issue on Innovative Solutions for Concrete Applications (2nd Edition)

Concrete remains the backbone of modern infrastructure, yet the challenges of sustainability, durability, and efficiency are pushing researchers and practitioners to rethink traditional approaches. Recent advances in 3D printing, digital technologies, sensor-based monitoring, and AI-driven design tools are opening new frontiers for how concrete can be produced, shaped, and applied in real-world projects. To capture and disseminate these emerging innovations, the journal Infrastructures (Impact Factor 2.9, CiteScore 6.0, MDPI) is launching the Special Issue “Innovative Solutions for Concrete Applications, 2nd Edition.”
