Dipartimento di Scienze Chimiche e Geologiche

Marzia Fantauzzi is Associate Professor of Analytical Chemistry (S.S.D. 03/A1) at the Department of Chemical and Geological Sciences of the University of Cagliari.

She carries out her research in the Surface Analysis, Electrochemistry, and Corrosion research group. Professor Fantauzzi's research focuses on the development of innovative analytical methodologies based on X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy and X-ray-induced Auger electron spectroscopy, primarily for the characterization of materials and elements classified as Group I carcinogens by the IARC and present in complex matrices. In the field of analytical spectroscopy, her interests focus on the study of interactions between fibers, nanostructured materials, and fluids that simulate biological fluids; and on the study of the mechanisms of interaction between the environment and sulfide minerals for the assessment of the environmental impact of minerals in biotic and abiotic environments and for the exploitation of minerals with biotechnological methods (bioleaching). She has also conducted studies on the reactivity of steels and copper alloys and on the surface characterization of materials of historical and artistic interest (glass, alloys, paper). She also works on the recovery of ions of toxic element (Pb, Cd, Zn, etc) and of technologically important elements, such as rare earth elements, from water using industrial waste, in order to valorize waste and promote the remediation of polluted waters. The analytical techniques most commonly used in her research are: X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy; X-ray induced Auger electron spectroscopy; atomic absorption spectroscopy; UV-visible spectroscopy; electrochemical techniques; ion chromatography.

She was born in Cagliari on October 2, 1975. In 2001, she graduated in Chemistry from the University of Cagliari with honors. In 2005, she received her PhD in Chemical Sciences, defending a thesis entitled "Oxidative dissolution of enargite influenced by bacterial leaching: surface chemistry and environmental significance."

She is co-author of over 65 publications in indexed journals (European Mineralogical Union). He has also authored 30 communications at national and international conferences.
