BIOSKETCH

Laura Carugati obtained the Bachelor in Biology  in 2009 at the University of Milano Bicocca. Master’s degree in Marine Biology in 2012 and PhD in Marine Biology and Ecology in 2017 at the University Polytechnic of Marche. She attended different laboratories in Spain and Belgium to learn morphological and molecular methods to study meiofaunal biodiversity and, in particular, nematods at the species level. 

Fron 2016 to 2019: post-doc fellow at the University Polytechnic of Marche focusing on the impacts of multiple stressors on marine ecosystems, restoration practices and the implementation of EU directives to deep-sea ecosystems. LC partecipated to different oceanographic cruises in the Mediterranean Sea, Atlantic and Pacific Ocean.

From 2019 to 2025: Researcher TD A and then TD B in Zoology at the University of Cagliari

From January 2025: associated professor in Zoology at the University of Cagliari

Currently, LC carries out her research in different marine ecosystems from shallow-water to deep-sea ones. Her main research interest deals with the study of benthic biodiversity and the conservation of commercial- and conservation-interest species using molecular approach.

Since 2023: LC is co-PI and responsible for UNICA for the PRIN-2022 Project ENGAGE.

LC partecipated in different national (FAO-GFCM, PON, PNRA, RITMARE) and international research projects (MEDUnits, IDEM, MERCES, MIDAS, DEVOTES).

LC attended and organized several congresses and workshop and participated to different oceanographic cruises in the Mediterranean Sea, Atlantic and Pacific Ocean (Porcupine Abyssal Plain, Mariana Trench), in collaboration with international research centres (NOC, JAMSTEC).

Tutor of >20 Bachelor’s and Master’s thesis in Biology and Marine Biology.  Author of >55 scientific publications on peer-reviewed journals including Nature Ecology and Evolution, Scientific Reports, Progress in Oceanography, Deep-sea Research I e II, Animal Conservation and other technical reports. Review Editor for Frontiers in Marine Science in sections Marine Molecular Biology and Ecology, Deep-Sea Environments and Ecology, Marine Biology; Reviewer for Estuarine Coastal and Shelf Science, Molecular Ecology.

LC obtained awards for research presented at scientific congresses (IEE Metrology for the Sea, Unione Zoologica Italiana, Accademia dei Lincei) and grants from COAST actions and EMBRC-France.
