Department of Political and Social Sciences

Francesca Congiu (Msc Asian Politics - SOAS University of London; PhD in History, Institutions and International Relations of modern and contemporary Asia, University of Cagliari) is Associate Professor in History of East Asia at the Department of Political Sciences and Social Studies of the University of Cagliari, the university where she teaches History of East Asia (Bachelor's Degree in Political Sciences). She has previously taught History of East Asia (CdL European International Sciences), Institutions and Political Processes in China (CdL Political and Government Sciences), History and Politics of the Far East (CdL International Relations), at the State University of Milan.

She was Visiting Researcher for a year at SOAS in London (School of Oriental and African Studies - Department of Development Studies) and was Visiting Fellow at the Oxford Center for Global History, Faculty of History, Oxford University. She has been working on three lines of research. The first concerns the relations between state, capital and labor in mainland China and Taiwan. The second concerns the history of colonialism in China, particular attention is paid to the colonial mining history and the connections between transnational capital and local political powers in early 20th century China. The third strand concerns the transnational history of ideas with particular attention to the thought of Antonio Gramsci in China.

She is a member of the Doctoral College in History, Cultural Heritage and International Studies of the University of Cagliari and of the Board of Directors of the Gramsci Lab (Centre for International Gramscian Studies), of the University of Cagliari. She is co-editor in chief of the Journal Notebooks: The Journal for Studies on Power (Brill). She is a member of the Confucius Classroom at the University of Cagliari (affiliated with the Confucius Institute of Sapienza University of Rome).
