Lorenzo Putzu has held the position of Assistant Professor at the Department of Electrical and Electronic Engineering, University of Cagliari, since October 2021. He received his Bachelor's degree, Master's degree and PhD in Computer Science from the University of Cagliari in 2010, 2012 and 2016, respectively. Since 2017, he has been part of the Computer Vision unit of the PRA Lab, Pattern Recognition and Applications Lab, and since 2024, he has been part of the AI for Industry unit of the sAIfer Lab, joint lab on safety and security of AI.

From the academic year 2022/23 to the current date, he has been a lecturer in Machine Learning for the Bachelor of Science in Applied Informatics and Data Analytics course of the Faculty of Science and the Bachelor of Science in Electrical Energy Engineering for Sustainable Development course of the Faculty of Engineering and Architecture. In the past, he has lectured on several courses at the University of Cagliari. From the academic year 2016/17 to the academic year 2018/19, he was a lecturer in Image Processing for the Bachelor of Medical Radiology Imaging and Radiotherapy Techniques course at the Faculty of Medicine. In the 2020/21 academic year, he was lecturer of Programming 1 (laboratory module) for the Bachelor of Science in Computer Science course of the Faculty of Science. From the academic year 2020/21 to the academic year 2021/22, he was a lecturer of Computer Science Laboratory for the Bachelor of Engineering for Environmental and Territorial Engineering course of the Faculty of Engineering and Architecture. In the academic year 2021/22, he was a lecturer in Electronic Computers for the Bachelor of Science in Biomedical Engineering course of the Faculty of Engineering and Architecture.

His main area of expertise is studying and developing pattern recognition techniques and their application to image and video processing and analysis. In particular, his contributions are in the fields of: people's health, mainly medical image analysis to provide tools for automatic or semiautomatic diagnosis as a support for medical activity; people safety and security, mainly image and video analysis from video surveillance cameras. He also contributes to research in the fields of analysis and cataloguing of textures and systems for cataloguing and retrieval (content-based image retrieval) of images of objects or scenes, also using relevance feedback techniques.   • IMMAGINA, IMaging MAnagement Guidelines and Informatics Network for law enforcement Agencies (2020-2022), together with Regola Srl and other national partners, and founded by European Space Agency (ARTES Integrated Applications Promotion Programme), with the role of responsible for 3 Work Packages

He is currently a member of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) and of the Italian Association for Research in Computer Vision, Pattern Recognition and Machine Learning (CVPL), the Italian section of the International Association for Pattern Recognition (IAPR). He is a member of the program committee in a number of conferences in the field of pattern recognition and its applications. He regularly acts as a reviewer for numerous international journals, including Artificial Intelligence in Medicine (Elsevier), Pattern Recognition (Elsevier), Transaction on Image Processing (IEEE) and Transaction on Medical Imaging (IEEE). He is an associate editor for the journal Pattern Analysis and Applications published by Springer. He is co-guest editor of the Special issue Multi-Sensor and Synthetic Data Fusion in Advanced AI Systems: Opportunities and Ethical Challenges, for the journal Information Fusion published by Elsevier. He is co-guest editor of the Special issue Synthetic Images to Support Computer-Aided Diagnosis Systems for the journal Pattern Recognition Letters published by Elsevier. He is part of the editorial board of the Medical Image Analysis topic (with more than 100 articles) edited by MDPI aimed at medical image analysis, including publications in 5 international journals: Applied Sciences, Journal of Imaging, Electronics, Diagnostics, Biomedicines. He participates as co-editor in 5 Special Issues edited by MDPI entitled Image Processing Techniques for Biomedical ApplicationsImage Processing Techniques for Biomedical Applications IIComputer Aided Diagnosis and Artificial Intelligence and Radiomics in Computer-Aided Diagnosis for the journal Applied Sciences and Advances in Biomedical Image Processing and Artificial Intelligence for Computer-Aided Diagnosis in Medicine for Journal of Imaging. He also previously served on the editorial board of the international journal Computational Intelligence and Neuroscience (Hindawi). He co-organizes and co-chairs the AIRCAD Workshop series (International Workshop on Artificial Intelligence and Radiomics in Computer-Aided Diagnosis) with two editions held in conjunction with ICIAP (International Conference on Image Analysis and Processing) in 2022 and 2023, respectively. He organized and co-chaired the V3SC Workshop (International Workshop on Video Surveillance Systems in Smart Cities: Integrating Traditional Cameras with High-Altitude and Advanced Monitoring Technologies) in conjunction with the WACV (Winter Conference on Applications of Computer Vision) conference in 2025.
