Department of Electrical and Electronic Engineering

Ambra Demontis is a Tenure Track Assistant Professor at the University of Cagliari, Italy. She received her M.Sc. degree (Hons.) in Computer Science and her Ph.D. degree in Electronic Engineering and Computer Science from the University of Cagliari, Italy, in 2014 and 2018. In 2016, for three months, she had been a Visiting Student at "The University of Manchester" in the research group led by Prof. Dr.  Gavin Brown. Since 2014, she has been part of the PRALab group. 

 

Research interest. Her research interest includes: 

- secure/robust machine learning (adversarial learning);

- kernel methods;

with applications to computer vision, malware detection, spam filtering, and biometric recognition.

 

Activities as reviewer/membership. Ambra Demontis has served on the program committee of different conferences and workshops, such as the USENIX Security Symposium, IJCAI e DLS, and journals, including TNNLS, TOPS, and Machine Learning. She is Associate Editor of the International Journal of Machine Learning and Cybernetics and the Elsevier Pattern Recognition Journal.  She has been co-chair of the AISec workshops (2019-2022), area chair and track chair of the International Conference on Pattern Recognition, and area chair (2024) of the NeurIPS conference. She has been newsletter editor, vice-chair, and chair of the IAPR Technical Committee on Statistical Pattern Recognition Techniques. She is a member of IEEE, ACM, and IAPR.

 

Teaching Activities. Ambra Demontis teaches since the academic year 2020-2021 the course "Object Oriented Programming Languages" for the bachelor degree in Electronic, Information and Telecommunication Engineering, and since the 2023-2024 the course "Artificial Intelligence" for the master's degree in Computer Engineering, Cybersecurity and Artificial Intelligence of the University of Cagliari. In the academic year 2022-2023 she held a course for the Ph.D. in Electronic and Information Engineering at the same university, entitled "Machine Learning Security". She had been a tutor for the course "Artificial Intelligence" in the academic year 2014-2015 and of the course "Fundamentals of Informatics" from the 2013 to the 2018. She has been a visiting professor for 10 days at the Northwestern Polytechnical University (NPU) in Xi'an, China, where she held some lessons about "Adversarial Machine Learning." She has been a co-supervisor of a NPU Ph.D. student. Furthermore, she has co-supervised two master students and supervised more than ten students of the bachelor degree in Electrical, Electronic and Informatics at the University of Cagliari.

 

National Scientific Qualification. In 2023, she received the National Scientific Qualification to teach as an Associate Professor. 

 

Awards. Ambra Demontis was awarded "Women of Science Youngs 2013" by the association ScienzaSocietàScienza and the municipality of Cagliari for her research work and dissemination activities.
