SCIENTIFIC PROFILE:

My scientific activity is related in particular to the field of urban geography. I have analysed in detail

different cities of several contexts, in particular in the Mediterranean (Naples, Cagliari, Tunis,

Marseilles) and in Latin America (Havana, Salvador de Bahia). In these researches, the analyses

involve on the one hand the territorial planning and public policies of urban spaces, and on the

other hand the territorial practices, representations and production of images (e.g. mental maps,

pictures) of the city made by the inhabitants themselves.

The analytical centrality given to the public and social actors in the reconfiguration of urban spaces

has led me to deepen the fields of marginality, stigmatization, and representations in the lowincome

neighbourhoods, as well as to the political and practical spaces arisen from the “city

reaction” to specific neo-liberal processes (e.g. gentrification, evictions, and so on). During my

works, I have adopted visual methodologies in order to capture, represent and document the

urban spaces through video, web-doc, film, experimental cartography. Over the last years, I have

been the coordinator of an interdisciplinary research group, called “geotelling – racconto

geografico”, which use visual methods to conduct research in a participatory way.

Main fields of study: Urban geography : Latin America, Mediterranean (Naples, Cagliari, Le Havane,

Salvador de Bahia, Tunis, Marseille) ; Land plan and public policies in urban spaces; Urban images; -

Marginality, stigmatization, representations of space, - Territorial practices of international migration -

Visual methodologies, documentation and representation of space-fiction in urban research.
