Andrea Pala is PhD associate professor of History of Medieval Art (L-ART/01), belongs to the Department of Letters, Languages and Cultural Heritage in the Faculty of Humanistic Studies of Cagliari. From 31st October 2012 to 30th December 2018, he acted as researcher (TdA 2012/15 – TdB 2015/18). He qualified as a second level professor, competition sector 10/B1-2012 Call (DD n. 222/2012). He graduated from the Faculty of Letters of the University of Cagliari with a thesis on the “Bulzi Deposition Wooden Group” (supervisor: prof. Robert Coroneus). He obtained his PhD in Written Sources of Mediterranean Civilization – XXII cycle, with thesis in History of Medieval Art on The liturgical furnishings of churches in Sardinia in written sources of the medieval age (6th-14th century).

Teaching activity 

The teaching activity involves teaching History of Medieval Art in the three-year degree course in Cultural, Archaeological, Historical-Artistic and Archival Heritage and in the e-learning degree course in Cultural Heritage (online). He teaches also Comparative History of Medieval Art in Europe in the Master of Arts degree program in Art History. Since the 2022/2023 academic year he has been teaching Environmental art and urban context (1st part architecture and medieval art in the urban context) in the School of Specialization in Architectural and Landscape Heritage at the Faculty of Engineering and Architecture of the University of Cagliari.

From 2016 to 2022 he taught History and Criticism of Medieval Art and History of Art of Byzantium in the master’s degree course in Archeology and History of Art (interclass). 

In the 2012/2013 academic year he was scientific coordinator for class A61, competition sept. 10/B1, at the TFA (Active Training Internship).

Integrative teaching workshops

Since the 2017 academic year, he has been involved in integrative teaching laboratories as coordinator (individually or in sharing with other Unica teachers) of the following laboratories:

• Systems and methods of Cataloging Historical and Artistic Heritage 

• Notions of artistic techniques

• Iconography and iconology from the Middle Ages to the Modern Age

International teaching activity

 He was Visiting professor & Researcher at the Department Ciències Històriques I Teoria de les Arts of the Universitat de Les Illes Balers (Spain). Winner of the international call: 'Convocatòria per la concessionó de projects de recerca amb investigators convidats de prestigious reconegut (first semester of l'any 2023).

He carried out Teaching Staff Mobility (MOSTA) LLP–Erasmus AA Program 2013/2014 at the Departamento Ciències Històriques I Teoria de les Arts of the Universitat de les Illes Balears (UIB) with seminar activities on the “Circulation of wooden artefacts in the western Mediterranean: relations between islands and mainland from the 12th to the 14th century”.

He is professor of the course in English “History of medieval art”, taught for the Alliance “European Digital UniverCity” (EDUC), established in response to the European Commission initiative "European Universities" (co-financed by the European Erasmus+ Programme), which sees the participation of the following transnational universities: University of Cagliari (Italy), Jaume I University (Spain), Masaryk University (Czech Republic), University of Pecs (Hungary), University of Potsdam (Germany), University of Rennes (France), University of South-Eastern Norway (Norway), University Paris Nanterre (France).

 

Collaborations, affiliations and scientific committees

He is Honorary Inspector for the city of Cagliari and the provinces of Oristano and Southern Sardinia, appointed by the General Directorate of Archaeology, Fine Arts and Landscape of the Ministry of Culture (Italy).

Since 2004 he has collaborated continuously with the Superintendency of Archaeology, Fine Arts and Landscape for the metropolitan city of Cagliari and the provinces of Oristano and Southern Sardinia (formerly BAPPSAE Superintendency for the provinces of Cagliari and Oristano), in the capacity of medieval art historian and scientific consultant.

He is a member of the National University Council for the History of Art (CUNSTA). 

He is a member of GRESMED, an international research group of the Universitat de Les Illes Balears (Spain) composed of professors who are experts in the field of Medieval studies (History, History of Arts and Literature). 

He is a member of the Red Temática de Investigación Cooperativa sobre Tardogótico. The Network has as its objective the study and enhancement of the architectural and artistic heritage of the late Gothic Mediterranean (15th-17th centuries) and is composed of international experts from Spain, Portugal and Italy.

He is a member of the International Scientific Committee (CIS) of the biennial series of conferences "Medieval Mediterranean". Architecture, Archeology and Art', organized by the Archaeological Park of the Aeolian Islands, curated as part of the Laboratoire d'Archéologie Médiévale et Moderne en Méditerranée – LA3M - Universtité Aix-Marseille/CNRS. 

He is a member of the Scientific Technical Committee (CTS) of the Sardinia Isola del Romanico Foundation, as a historian of medieval art and expert in the discipline. He is also member of the scientific committee (CS) of the "I Tempi" series of the ISKRA publishing house in Ghilarza (OR).

 

Direction/participation in editorial boards of scientific journals

Since 2019 he has been Editor in Chief of the international scientific journal of Art History ABside, Open Acces (Ojs) journal of the University of Cagliari, of which he is the founder.

Since 2018 he has been a member of the Consell de redacció of Mayurqa. magazine of the Departament de Ciències Històriques I Teoria de les Arts de la Universitat de les Illes Balears (UIB) SPAIN.

Since 2012 he has been co-director of ArcheoArte. International scientific journal of Archeology and Art of the University of Cagliari, peer-review and Open Access

He works as a peer reviewer for various national and international scientific journals, conference proceedings, monographic volumes in Italy and abroad. 

 

Institutional positions 

He is a member of the PhD of History, Cultural Heritage and International Studies of the University of Cagliari. From 2013 to 2023 he was an expert member in the CAV self-evaluation commission and other internal commissions and public competitions. He is currently a tutor teacher of the CdL in History of Art, Erasmus Contact for Universitat De Les Illes Balears (Spain), member of the Steering Committee of the degree course in Archaeological, Historical, Artistic and Archival Cultural Heritage and of the master's degree course in History of art.

Research Activities 

Printed and digital publications reflect the main research interests in the following thematic fields: iconography, medieval sculpture and architecture, circulation of artefacts in the western Mediterranean, with a particular focus on central Italy, the Iberian Peninsula and the islands. He has collaborated on international research projects with the University of Cagliari, Department of Archaeological and Historical Artistic Sciences and the Universitat de Barcelona, Departement d'Historia de l'art (UB), Facultat de Geografia I Historia (ITALY-SPAIN), and national with the Institute of History of Mediterranean Europe ISEM –CNR and University of Cagliari, Department of Classical Philology, Glottology and Historical Sciences of Antiquity and the Middle Ages of Cagliari. From 2014 to 2017 he was part of the Claustra International Research project: Atlas de la espiritualidad femenina de los Reinos peninsulares s. XII – XVI, coordinated by the Departament d'Història Medieval, Paleografia I Diplomatica dell'Universitat de Barcelona”. From 2014 to 2019, he was a member of Unita II of the Fundamental and Basic Research Project (RAS): “E Pluribus unum. The Sardinian identity profile from the Middle Ages to the Contemporary”, coordinated by ISEM-CNR of Cagliari.  From 2016 to 2018, he was a Member of the Research Unit of the Project “Knowing the sea to experience the sea” Know the Sea to live the Sea. University of Cagliari (Foundation of Sardinia Convention), Annuality 2016, of which he was scientific director of the research grant: Sculptural artefacts from marine discoveries and in the coastal area of Sardinia (6th-10th century).

From 2019 to 2021 he was a member of unit 2 of the Research Project "Cities between sea and lagoon: from Santa Gilla to Cagliari. Archaeological, geological, historical, settlement and social aspects', coordinated by the CNR National Research Council - Institute of History of Mediterranean Europe, in collaboration with the Department of Letters, Languages and Cultural Heritage of the University of Cagliari. From 2021 to 2023, he was a member of Unita II of the two-year Fondazione di Sardegna Project “Talking stones”. Society and culture in Sardinia through the analysis of stone materials. An interdisciplinary path from ancient times to the present day, across archaeology, architecture, art and literature (annuality 2020), of which he was scientific director of the Research Grant: Written sources and from the restoration archive of the church of Sant'Efisio di Nora in Pula. From 2023 to 2025 he was Principal Investigator (PI), coordinator and scientific director of the research project “Santa Chiara DTrecento. Virtual reconstruction for the promotion and enhancement of the medieval monument”, carried out as part of the activities of the Department of Letters, Languages and Cultural Heritage, in collaboration with the monastery of Santa Chiara in Oristano, the Archdiocese of Oristano - Diocesan Cultural Heritage Office. Since 2023 he has been coordinator of the Guillelmus Project, which takes place as part of the activities of the Department of Letters, Languages and Cultural Heritage, in collaboration with the Archdiocese of Cagliari and the Superintendency of Archaeology, Fine Arts and Landscape for the metropolitan city of Cagliari and the provinces of Oristano and Southern Sardinia.

The dissemination activity was expressed in participation in conferences in Italy, Spain, Portugal, France, Switzerland, Croatia and England, in individual conferences on the occasion of exhibitions, television programs or other events.

The event was organized by Itinera Romanica, the Friends of the Romanesque Association in the Arborense Diocesan Museum (Piazza duomo 1 – Oristano), in collaboration with the Autonomous Region of Sardinia, Ilisso Edizioni and the Diocesan Museum itself.
