RESEARCH

With multi-objective and genetic algorithms, Prof. Pilo pioneered the optimal distributed generation allocation in distribution networks. He contributed to distribution planning and operation research with over 250 papers (some in the 99 percentile of most cited power system papers) and five books. He recently investigated the use of flexibility in distribution systems following the path traced by CIGRE WG C6.19, which he chaired in 2014 and is now incorporated into the EU Directive 944/2019. Cost-benefit analysis and power system project appraisal are fields of interest related to ISGAN WG 3. He has been a member of the jury for the elevation to the grade of doctor of philosophy at prestigious Universities (DTU, EPFL, NTNU, Ecole Polytechnique de Louvain, Università di Genova, Bologna, Salerno, Politecnico di Milano, Université Grenoble Alpes, University of Manchester, Indian Institute of Technology, Ecole Centrale de Lille, etc.). He chaired international WG on planning and development for CIRED and CIGRE. As a power system expert, he advised the Italian Regulator for Energy (Autorità di Regolazione per Reti, Energia e Ambiente, ARERA), the Italian Minister of Development, the Italian Minister of Research and University and other national and international agencies. He worked in Jordan, Uzbekistan and Brazil on power distribution planning and roadmap development.
