Department of Electrical and Electronic Engineering
Massimo Farina is an Associate Professor of Legal Informatics at the Department of Electrical and Electronic Engineering (DIEE), University of Cagliari. He holds national academic qualification for Full Professorship in the academic recruitment field 12 H3 – Philosophy of Law (GIUR-17/A).
He is a qualified lawyer registered with the Bar of Cagliari, authorised to practise before the Higher Courts.
He holds a Law degree from the University of Cagliari and obtained a PhD in “Law and New Technologies” from CIRSFID – University of Bologna. He also holds Level II University Master’s degrees in:
Law of Informatics and Theory and Technique of Norm-making (Sapienza University of Rome),
Data Protection Officer and Privacy Law (University of Naples “Suor Orsola Benincasa”),
Internet of the Humans and Things (University of Rome “Tor Vergata”).
He is responsible for the following teaching activities:
- Legal Computer Science in the Master’s Degree Programme in Internet Technologies Engineering and in the Integrated Master’s Degree in Law;
- Digital Forensic in the Master’s Degree in Internet Technologies Engineering;
– Computer Law in the Master’s Degree in Computer Engineering, Cybersecurity and Artificial Intelligence;
- Ethics and Law of Digital Healthcare in the Master’s Degree in Biomedical Engineering.
He currently serves as Data Protection Officer (DPO) of the University of Cagliari, pursuant to Article 37 of Regulation (EU) 2016/679. He is also Coordinator of the ICT4Law&Forensics Lab (https://sites.unica.it/ict4lawforensics/), based at the Department of Electrical and Electronic Engineering.
He is a member of:
the Degree Programme Committee for the Master’s Degree in Internet Technologies Engineering;
the Committee on Employment and Industry Relations (CRML) of the DIEE Department.
He is a board member of ANDIG (National Association of Legal Informatics and ICT Law Academics) and a member of CNIT (National Inter-University Consortium for Telecommunications).
He is also affiliated with the Networks for Humans laboratory (NET4U) (formerly Multimedia & Communications Laboratory – MCLab) at the DIEE, and a Research Fellow at the Information Society Law Center – Coordinated Research Centre on Information Society Law, Department of Legal Sciences, University of Milan.
His main research interests include: data protection, digital government, e-health, legal protection of software, artificial intelligence and robotics, cybercrime, and digital forensics.
He is the author of several monographs, book chapters, and numerous scientific journal articles addressing a wide range of topics in Legal Informatics and ICT Law.
He is Co-Editor of the book series “Diritto dell’Informatica e delle Nuove Tecnologie” and “Orizzonte Jus” (Key Edizioni), a member of the editorial board of the scientific journal “Ciberspazio e Diritto” (edited by Prof. Giovanni Ziccardi – Mucchi publisher), and a member of the scientific board of the “Rivista Elettronica di Diritto, Economia, Management” (edited by Prof. Donato A. Limone – Clioedu).
