Leonardo Regano earned his Master's Degree in Computer Engineering (final grade: 110/110) from the Polytechnic University of Turin in 2015 and his Ph.D. in Computer and Systems Engineering in 2019. He currently serves as a Researcher TD-A (Assistant Professor) in Computer Engineering at the University of Cagliari. Previously, he was a Research Fellow from 2015 to 2020 and a Senior Research Fellow from 2020 to 2023 at the Polytechnic University of Turin. His research interests mainly focus on the security of systems and computer networks, specifically in the following areas:
- software security and protection;
- applications of Machine Learning and Deep Learning for cybersecurity;
- software network security.
From March to May 2023, he was a Visiting Researcher at Ghent University (Belgium). Since 2024, Dr. Regano has been an Associate Editor for the International Journal of Computers and Applications, published by Taylor & Francis. He has been a member of the program committee for the ACSAC, ACNS, DFRWS EU, AISEC (CCS workshop), WoRMA (EuroS&P workshop), ENS (ARES workshop), and ITASEC conferences since 2024. He is a reviewer for several scientific journals, including IEEE Transactions on Dependable and Secure Computing, IEEE Transactions on Information Forensics and Security, and Elsevier Computer & Security. Since 2023, he has been involved in the COVERT project, part of the SERICS Foundation - Spoke 3 Attacks and Defenses. He has participated, also as a work unit leader, in several international research projects, including the EU-funded projects ASPIRE (2013-2017) and PALANTIR (2020-2023).
From 2024, he is:
- lecturer of the Operating Systems Laboratory course for the Bachelor's Degree in Electronics, Computer and Telecommunications Engineering;
- co-lecturer of the Operating Systems course for the Bachelor's Degree in Electronics, Computer and Telecommunications Engineering;
- co-lecturer of the Industrial Software Development course for the Master's Degree in Computer Engineering, Cybersecurity, and Artificial Intelligence at the University of Cagliari;
- lecturer of the Software Security and Protection course for the Ph.D. in Electronic and Computer Engineering at the University of Cagliari.
Previously, he was a co-lecturer for the Operating Systems course (2023) for the Master's Degree in Computer Engineering, Cybersecurity, and Artificial Intelligence at the University of Cagliari and a teaching assistant for the Object-Oriented Programming (2018-2021) and Information Systems Security (2022-2023) courses for the Bachelor's and Master's Degrees in Computer Engineering at the Polytechnic University of Turin.
In 2023, he obtained an international patent (more details on Knowledge Share or Google Patents) for an innovative technology based on Deep Learning for the automated assessment of software security.
