Dipartimento di Scienze Chimiche e Geologiche

Several topics are available for conducting internal internships or thesis projects (also in collaboration with other members of the Solid State Chemistry and Nanomaterials research group):

  • Archaeometric studies
  • Nanomaterials for cultural heritage or for contaminant removal/degradation

Archaeometric Studies

OBJECTIVE: Characterization of raw materials and/or artifacts for solving questions of archaeological interest (composition, provenance, function, production technology)

STAGES: Literature review, material characterization, data processing (also with multivariate analysis techniques), preparation of the final report/thesis

TYPE OF ACTIVITY: Characterization using: XRF, FTIR/ATR/DRIFT. Depending on the specific objectives: PXRD, SEM-EDXS, TGA, ICP-OES, and Raman spectroscopy (in collaboration with expert researchers)

EXPECTED OUTCOMES: Definition of a strategy for material analysis and acquisition of knowledge and skills in characterization and data processing

Nanomaterials for Cultural Heritage or Contaminant Removal/Degradation

OBJECTIVE: Development of nanomaterials for applications in the field of cultural heritage (conservation, restoration, diagnostics) or for the removal/degradation of inorganic and organic contaminants

STAGES: Literature review, synthesis and characterization of materials, and preparation of the report

TYPE OF ACTIVITY: Synthesis and characterization through PXRD, TEM, HRTEM, SEM, FTIR, TGA, DLS, ELS, ICP-OES, N2 physisorption, XRF

EXPECTED OUTCOMES: Acquisition of knowledge and skills in nanomaterial synthesis methodologies, their properties, and applications
