Abstract

The Moestra Augustea della Romanità was inaugurated in Rome on 23 September 1937 on the occasion of the bimillenial anniversary of Augustus’ birth. The exhibition, opened after the occupation of Ethiopia in 1936, aimed at comparing Ancient and Fascist Rome, and their main figures Augustus, the first emperor of Rome, and Mussolini, the founder of the Italian Empire. The paper discusses the Fascist propaganda making use of the myth of Rome as a means to legitimize Mussolini´s dictatorship.
