Dreams: The pursuit of consensus and the display of national power - Chinese soccer softpower narratives

Abstract

This chapter discusses sport in Chinese public discourse as a means of internal (对内) softpower (软实力), with focus on soccer. While China’s recent arrival onto the global soccer stage has attracted abundant media coverage in the Western world, especially regarding the financial and sport-related aspects of the development, international research on the political meaning of the phenomenon is still scarce. This chapter offers insights into China’s current use of sport for internal political purposes through a language based analysis of China’s official and media narratives on football. It places the discussion within the analytic framework of internal softpower.

Questo capitolo discute l'utilizzo dello sport nel discorso pubblico cinese come mezzo di soft power (软实力) interno (对内), con un focus sul calcio. Sebbene il recente ingresso della Cina nella scena calcistica globale abbia attirato molta attenzione mediatica da parte del mondo occidentale, soprattutto per quanto riguarda gli aspetti finanziari e sportivi dello sviluppo, la ricerca internazionale sul significato politico del fenomeno è ancora scarsa. Il capitolo analizza l'uso attuale dello sport da parte della Cina per scopi politici interni attraverso un'analisi linguistica delle narrazioni istituzionali e mediatiche cinesi sul calcio, collocando la discussione all'interno del quadro analitico del soft power "interno".
