Abstract
The essay aims to study a series of Florentine judicial records concerning reprisals during the late 13th and early 14th centuries. These records not only show several cases of violence and conflict arisen from the ordinary practice of trade through communal Italy, but they also witness the complex role played by the legal culture in such cases. When a reprisal was asked to the municipal councils, they usually received a consilium by a lawyer concerning the legal foundation of the case. The discussion about the reprisals involved different problems: economic interests, political initiatives and legal interpretation. These records are therefore a crucial possibility to understand the relations between politics and law in communal Italy.| File | Size | Format | |
