Abstract

The genitive demonstratives dessen/deren/derer represent a special category of pronouns which are not always given the attention they deserve in grammatical description of German. Compared to other d-demonstratives, their use has not yet been adequately researched in terms of their functional behaviour or their participation in the structuring of information. As a contribution to remedying this situation, the present article aims to provide a systematic description of the grammar and the peculiarities of this group of demonstratives, which are still not well covered in the research literature, and to give a quantitative and qualitative description of their use in present-day written and oral German.
