Abstract

Based on occurrences of Monteverdi's name in Luigi Nono’s archive – encompassing musical sources, correspondence, writings, books, and recordings – this chapter reconstructs three key aspects of Monteverdi’s influence on Nono’s compositional thought. These aspects relate to Nono’s exploration of performative space, his engagement with specific works and projects by Monteverdi, and his reflections on a 'new rhetoric' of music. The analysis refers these findings to Nono’s strategy of self-legitimation, shedding light on how Monteverdi's legacy contributed to the building of Nono's artistic identity and reputation.
