Abstract

The essay traces twentieth-century interpretations of the late medieval crisis, attempting to link the evolution of historical sensibilities to changing contemporary economic and political circumstances. Particular emphasis is given, on the one hand, to the major publishing initiatives promoted in Italy by Ruggiero Romano and, on the other, to the gradual fading of interest in economic and social history within Italian and international medievalism and modernism.
