Iconografia e simbolismo nella rappresentazione della spada tra tardo antico e basso medioevo (IV-XIII secolo)

Abstract

The representation of the sword is very common in works of art produced between the late ancient age and low middle ages, often proving to be valuable iconographic source for the hypothetical reconstruction of artifacts that no longer exist. Also, as you can see from the iconic images, analysis of the components of a sword it lent, now as then, to accommodate various kinds of ornaments, taking even a precise simboli. For example, among the sculptures, to the importance of the Eagle figure that is associated with the sword, he remarked in different historical periods and in different art forms, a precise meaning of power. The paper will trace a path of some of figurations diachronic artifact, trying to recognize the type of the object and to understand the reasons for which it was represented.
