Abstract
This chapter discusses climate change adaptation (CCA) and energy transition with reference to spatial policies based on nature-based solution (NBSs) focused on urban greening and water resources management, and to the establishment and implementation of the Renewable energy communities (RECs). As for CCA, the extension of existing green areas and the creation of new parks are taken into consideration, which may entail expansion or new plantation of city meadows, tree lines, wooded areas and urban forests. These urban-greening-oriented measures are aimed at increasing carbon capture and storage and at mitigating the urban heat island phenomenon, as much as green roofs, walls and facades do. A second relevant profile, related to NBSs, is represented by water resources management practices, with particular reference to operations aimed at collecting rainwater, at improving permeabilization and drainage capacity of soils, and at managing runoff, especially in case of extreme weather events. RECs are relevant expressions of the progressive strengthening of participation demand from the local societies’ stakeholders towards energy production and distribution. Such RECs contribute to energy transition processes which build on value chains based on renewable energy sources and, at the same time, on natural capital protection. In this conceptual framework, the market plays a fundamental role, as regards two profiles: on the one hand, with reference to the human and financial resources of the public administrations and of the private sector which participation demand on behalf of the local societies is based upon; on the other hand, as for the public awareness-building practices concerning the issues at stake.| File | Size | Format | |
