Abstract
Schools, such as the totality of places for knowledge, play a crucial role in urban dynamics assuming a diffuse and relational dimension of openness, grounded in contexts. The Architecture project can be the chance for exploring relevant and emerging issues, operating in an innovative and proactive way in relation to the dynamics of an ever-changing territory. Through a systemic and interdisciplinary approach, the research group develops methods and procedures aimed at reading and interpreting different contexts. The concept approach conceives the idea of a diffuse school1 as a contemporary, free, democratic and inclusive learning space. The architecture project becomes a privileged research tool through a perspective able to read the transformations of the territory and the environment. Recalling Umberto Eco’s intentio lectoris, Mantua becomes a pretext in which places for education constitute a new topography in the urban construction of the city. The research aims at revealing all the spaces that would be allow the network of schools in Mantua to be intended as a single urban system. School buildings keeps on being emerging by finding connection with additional educating spaces such as streets, squares, gardens, theaters, churches, museums and libraries to rediscover the presence of the lake as an environmental system articulated in closed, open, formal and non-formal spaces.
