Abstract

In reflecting on sleep, phenomenological thought presents in an original way a consciousness that misses itself by allowing the world and time to slip away, sink, and reappear, so that interruption and self-abstention become constituent elements of subjectivity. This entry discusses different phenomenological approaches to the philosophical question of sleep, both from the perspective of a theory of consciousness and by investigating the world of life and history, in its vigilance and sleepiness.

Goal 4: Quality education
The Encyclopedia of Phenomenology presents a comprehensive mapping of phenomenological thought on a global scale within philosophy and related disciplines. It appeals to researchers in philosophy and related theoretical/applied disciplines, as well as to advanced undergraduate and graduate students. The Introduction surveys the current state and significance of international phenomenological research and the 200+ entries address five categories: figures; concepts (life-world, noema, Dasein, etc.) and methods; themes and tendencies; contributions and debates; and finally, cross-fertilizations. Research in the field has developed on an international scale resulting in a need for such a state-of-art encyclopedia. This reference work is the source in phenomenology for readers looking to verify terms, figures, and themes as well as to build upon for further publications. (From the official presentation online)
