Abstract

This paper proposes a rule-based Energy Management System (EMS) for the marine electric propulsion system presented by the IEEE Motor Vehicle Challenge (MVC) 2025. The system integrates a Dual Three-Phase Permanent Magnet Synchronous Machine (DTP-PMSM), whose three-phase windings are supplied by a battery pack and a supercapacitor module, respectively. The proposed EMS optimizes the DTP-PMSM power flow by utilizing the supercapacitor module to compensate for sudden power variation, by providing peak shaving during towing operations as well. Simulations based on the IEEE MVC 2025 reference cycles demonstrate effective power distribution and reduced battery current fluctuations achievable by the proposed EMS compared to the MVC 2025 baseline EMS.
