Abstract

This study analyses the production of the Catalan group ‘Generación del medio siglo’ in the 1950s, searching for any differences that could justify the presence of an uncommon character-type, unusual in the social novels of the Madrid group. The analysis particularly focuses on Juan Goytisolo, Juan Marsé and Ana María Matute, the latter generally excluded from the category of social-realist writers. The meaning of the type, which is the aim in this study, actually lies in the connection with her, in an evolutionary trajectory beginning with the theme of the wounded childhood and leading to the fracture between the Catalan identity and the national one.
