Abstract

In the 18th century, like many other European countries, the Kingdom of Sardinia developed plans for internal colonization and settlement. The government offered free land, tax exemptions, and noble titles to those who would bring new people, innovative techniques, specialized crops, and new trade to the kingdom. This invitation attracted corsairs, fortune-seeking adventurers, political exiles, commoners, and nobles. Proposals came from Tabarka, Malta, Corsica, Jerusalem, Venice, and Marseille. What impact did all of this have on the kingdom's future, its demographics, economies, societies, and governing class? In addressing these questions, this book provides a systematic analysis of the Savoyard population policy, clarifying the role played by Mediterranean migrations, Euro-African geopolitics, and the local population, as well as the consequences of building a new and positive relationship between the kingdom and its maritime domain.
