Abstract
The essay is part of an inter-university research project financed within the PRIN 2017 and dedicated to the relationship between cinema and consumption in Italy in the period between 1950 and 1973, taking its starting point from a survey on the clothing worn by Italian actresses in their daily lives, published by the weekly magazine ‘L'Europeo’ in 1955. The significant role acquired by fashion in Italian society emerges when considering the opportunities for growth in terms of professional, social and gender identity offered to the co-protagonists of three films directed in the first half of the 1950s: Le ragazze di Piazza di Spagna (Emmer, 1952), Il mondo le condanna (Franciolini, 1953) and Le amiche (Antonioni, 1955). Cinema thus seems to open the way for a new visibility of women, within and beyond the screen, at the very moment when it suggests unprecedented consumption habits.| File | Dimensione | Formato | |
