Abstract

The Thesaurus, vocabulario de objetos del culto católico is a fundamental scholarly tool for the appreciation and understanding of sacred art also from a lexicological point of view, a linguistic witness to events that-through the objects of worship and their names- intersect along epochs and cultures. Moreover, the Thesaurus fulfills the dual purpose of inventorying and describing the function of the tools of worship and, at the same time, composing its terminological collection. Each glossary entry is effectively systematized under the corresponding category and supplemented by a selection of equivalent terms. The macro-categories identify the five major groups to which the items belong: religious furnishings, linens and garments for liturgical use, religious utensils, vestments and musical instruments. Within these, distinctions are based on the relationships between the objects and the various practices of Catholic worship (eucharist, sacraments, processions, liturgical celebrations, etc.).
