Abstract

Abstract: (max 200 parole) Contemporary events, such as the pandemic, economic crisis, and climate change, to name a few, have radically altered lifestyles, markets, and individual perspectives, and have called into question many of the assumptions upon which the project management criteria were based, even though they have not yet been formalized. Purpose: This article introduces a formalized new process group of sustainability management within the “Process Group: A Practice Guide” processes of PMI (former PMBok 6th), so that project managers and project teams can embrace sustainability management when managing projects in the new global context. Methodology: This study employs a theoretical approach based on the enhancement of the “Process Group: A Practice Guide” (former PMBok 6th). Findings: The result is the formalization of a new process group called Sustainability Management, also integrated as new knowledge domain. Managerial implications: The formalization of the new PM process devoted to sustainability will govern the actions of project managers, with a tendency toward the establishment of new professional figures such as the sustainable project manager. This has significant managerial ramifications. Research limitations: The main limitation of this study is to the necessity of integrating this research with the analysis of seventh edition contents of the PMBoK, bringing together its principles and domains. Originality: The originality of this paper lies in the proposal of a new group of processes in project management that was not previously contemplated.
