Abstract
Geographical mobility is now a salient feature of young people's lives, particularly in countries such as Italy where socio-economic and cultural conditions are unfavourable. However, the subsequent lively debate on youth geographical mobility seems to focus primarily on the rational and instrumental aspects, neglecting the emotional ones. Drawing on data from two recent qualitative studies (2019–2021) involving narrative interviews and visual elicitation regarding the conceptions and practices of geographical mobility among young adults aged 24–34, this chapter seeks to emphasise the emotional aspect of youth mobility. It does so by examining the significance that mobile young individuals attach to it, exploring the interplay between rational and emotional considerations. Analysing the mobility paths of the young people involved — as a form of youth agency with regard to the future and its uncertainties — allows us to consider mobility as an analytical perspective through which to understand the relationship between young people and their changing futures.| File | Dimensione | Formato | |
