Abstract

This chapter critically explores the transformative role of blockchain technology in waste management, particularly within the context of smart cities. It emphasizes how blockchain can revolutionize traditional waste management practices by introducing enhanced efficiency, transparency, and accountability. The chapter addresses current waste management challenges, such as increasing waste volumes, complexity in waste tracking, and the need for sustainable practices. Through the integration of case studies and theoretical insights, the chapter traces the growth in blockchain applications, identifying emerging trends and the expanding scope of this technology in waste management sectors, facilitating the tracking of waste streams, ensuring compliance with regulations, and fostering the adoption of circular economy principles. This analysis paves the way for developing more sustainable and intelligent waste management ecosystems in smart cities.
