Operational Strategy Modeling for Enhancing Distribution Network Resilience Assessment

Abstract

This paper proposes a method to enhance the resilience of medium voltage distribution networks using operational strategies instead of infrastructure upgrades. The study compares the impact of forming low and medium voltage microgrids during windstorm events by applying the resilience trapezoid metric and Monte Carlo simulations. Results from a realistic case show that microgrids can significantly reduce energy not supplied, offering a cost-effective way to support service continuity during emergencies. The role of the number of available crews is also emphasized to highlight the importance of modeling the strategy during the recovery phase.
