Abstract

This essay explores the mediating role of the viennese Cardinal Franz König (1964–1980) between the Catholic Church and the Communist East, a role epitomized by the phrase «Ostreisen sind kein Dolchstoß». Operating from a neutral Austria, König championed the Vatican’s Ostpolitik with an approach of discreet dialogue and “small steps,” working to overcome the isolation of the “Churches of Silence.” Through numerous travels and the establishment of the Pro Oriente foundation (1964), he fostered ecumenical contacts and advocated for religious freedom. His efforts proved crucial for rapprochement between the two Europes and the advancement of human rights, solidifying his status as a figure of indisputable moral authority.
