Andrea Cannas graduated in Modern Literature in 1997, with a grade of 110 cum laude, with a thesis on Salvatore Satta entitled History and Historiographers in the Work of Salvatore Satta. In 1998, he was awarded a scholarship for a PhD in Comparative Literature at the University of Cagliari. His research project focused on the myth of Orpheus in the second half of the 20th century, concentrating in particular on the rewritings of the myth by Calvino, Pavese, Savinio, Beckett, Rushdie, and Okri. He obtained his PhD in June 2002. He is a permanent researcher at the Department of Literature, Languages, and Cultural Heritage. He has taught medieval and modern Italian literature and literature teaching, and currently teaches Italian literature at the Faculty of Humanities at the University of Cagliari for the degree courses in Literature and Cultural Heritage.

He has published books and essays on Dante, Bruno, Galilei, Collodi, Pavese, Calvino, Deledda, Satta, and Atzeni, and has explored the presence of classical myths in Leopardi's Operette morali. He also studies singer-songwriters, particularly the work of Fabrizio De André; short forms of narrative in Italian literature; and the relationship and intersemiotic connections between literature and graphic novels.

He is a member of the editorial board of Portales magazine and co-founder and board member of the international journal of intercultural studies Medea. He has participated as a speaker at international conferences at the universities of Seville, Aix-en-Provence, Pécs, Wroclaw, and Craiova, and has organized international conferences in Cagliari (In/Out. Trajectories of Captivity and Freedom, 2019; Immaginare mondi: l'alieno e l'altrove, 2017; Spaced out: lo spazio nel fumetto, 2017; XENOI.
