Abstract

The historical archives of Italian universities have been the subject of careful analysis since 1994 and they are an invaluable source of information on society, on the relationship between education and power, and on the protagonists of Italian history. The relationship that universities have with their records is often controversial: apart from a few excellent ones, most universities have not carried out the necessary reorganization and description work. Heritage fragmentation in several preservation sites inevitably leads to a web mosaic of descriptions. This essay reconstructs the puzzle of university archives on the web, describing the heritage, the finding aids and the institutional websites.
