This volume explores the wealth of the Church in late medieval Italy, demonstrating how cathedrals, monasteries, convents, hospitals, and brotherhoods played a leading role not only in the realms of spirituality and charity but also in the economy. Through research focused on assets, taxation, archives, and administrative practices, the book reconstructs the strategies, conflicts, and innovations that shaped cities and territories between the 13th and 15th centuries, drawing particularly on extraordinary collections of unpublished documents. What emerges is a surprisingly dynamic world, in which the management of sacred assets interacted with markets, political powers, and urban society, revealing the original and decisive role of the Church in Italian economic and social history.
Il volume indaga la ricchezza della Chiesa nell’Italia basso medievale, mostrando come cattedrali, monasteri, conventi, ospedali e confraternite siano stati protagonisti non solo nell’ambito della spiritualità e dell’assistenza, ma anche in quello dell’economia. Attraverso ricerche dedicate a patrimoni, fiscalità, archivi e pratiche amministrative, il libro ricostruisce strategie, conflitti e innovazioni che influenzarono città e territori fra XIII e XV secolo, valorizzando soprattutto gli straordinari depositi di documentazione inedita. A emergere è un mondo sorprendentemente dinamico, in cui la gestione dei beni sacri dialogava con mercati, poteri politici e società urbana, rivelando il ruolo originale e decisivo della Chiesa nella storia economica e sociale italiana.
