How to search for a book or magazine in our online catalogue

BiblioSar is the catalogue of the Sardinian Regional SBN Network, in which our entire University Library System participates.
Through this catalogue, you can access a collection of over 2 million titles, including books, journals, multimedia materials and special items. Via the integrated Reteindaco platform, you can also access the collection of digital resources.
The home page features a showcase of the latest acquisitions from the public libraries belonging to the Sardinian Regional SBN Network, and also highlights new arrivals in the University’s libraries.

You can enter one or more terms in the basic search field. If you do not select a specific library, the search will be carried out across the entire library network.

You can enter words relating to the title, author, publisher or year of publication of the text you are searching for. Please avoid truncation where possible, unless using the wildcard characters listed below.

The catalogue offers autocomplete functions as you type.

To search for a term in both the singular and plural forms, or simply in its compound forms, or if you are unsure of the correct spelling of the term, you can use the following wildcard characters:

  •  * (asterisk) replaces any number of characters. It allows you to truncate a word and search for all words with the same root (book* for book, books, bookseller, bookshop, to balance, etc.)
  •  ? (question mark) replaces a single character (wom?n for woman or women, etc.)

To define the focus of a search more effectively, you can use the so-called Boolean operators (AND, OR, NOT), typed in capital letters, in combination with your search terms
- AND: finds documents in which all the search terms provided appear
- OR: finds documents containing at least one of the search terms
- NOT: excludes documents containing the unwanted term

Placing two terms within quotation marks (“”) allows you to search for them in close proximity and in the exact order in which they were entered.

The advanced search form allows you to specify the individual fields in which the search terms should appear (title, author, publisher, etc.), and also provides an alphabetical list of terms based on the characters you have entered (arrow to the right of the search field).

The combination of individual fields is defined by Boolean logic. It is also possible to filter by document type and the library in which they are held.

Once you have entered your search terms and clicked ‘Search’, the catalogue will return a list of documents. In a simple search, the search terms may appear in any of the description fields.

The list of documents is displayed in order of relevance – determined by bibliographic criteria matching the search. However, using the drop-down menu, you can sort the list alphabetically by title or author’s name, or chronologically by year (from the most recent to the oldest, or vice versa).

Below the description of each document, you will find a list of the libraries that hold it.

Using the buttons just above the results, you can switch between a full view and a compact view of the results, with the option to select specific items and view their details.

Even without logging in, you can save the results to a ‘temporary’ list, which is deleted when you close the OPAC. However, you can preserve the data by printing it or sending it via email.

The list of results provided by the catalogue can be filtered using the so-called ‘facets’ located in the left-hand column of the screen.

These options allow you to filter, for example, by the library holding the document, the author of the work, the year or language of publication, the subject, or the type of publication.

Clicking on the name of a facet progressively displays the filtered list of results.

Below the filter area is the search extension function, which allows you to expand your search to the catalogue of the National Library Service (OPAC SBN), the reference point for bibliographic information in Italy.

Clicking on an item in the results list will take you to the document’s details page.

Along with basic information about the author and the publication of the work in question, you can view the libraries that hold the document (under 'Lo trovi in', 'You can find it at’').

If the document is held by only one library, details of its availability, inventory and shelf location will be displayed immediately. If, however, the document is held by multiple libraries, you will need to click on the desired one. You can select the 'Tutte le biblioteche', 'All libraries'  option to view the overall location details on a single screen.

The initial list of results is always visible in the left-hand pane of the OPAC screen, in the NAVIGATOR column

Under the name of the selected library, the available services and their statuses will appear for each copy:

  •     Document available and eligible for loan: the title is available, is held in the library and can be borrowed
  •     No copies of the title available for loan and document reservation: the copies are currently on loan; you can only place a reservation
  •     Document reserved: the title has been returned to the library and is awaiting the reader who reserved it

For documents on loan, the catalogue shows the due date and the number of any pending reservations.

By clicking on ‘Scheda', 'Record’, you can also view the complete bibliographic details of the work; the ‘Library’ and ‘Map’ tabs take you to the information screens for the library and its geographical location.

If the catalogue contains enhanced data on the document’s movements, it allows you to view (under the heading 'Chi ha letto questo ha letto anche ...',  ‘Those who read this also read...’) the titles that users most frequently associate with the item in question.

By clicking on 'Scaffale',  ‘Shelf’, you can also view a virtual representation of the document’s location within the library’s collections and browse the titles that come before and after the selected one.

This feature is useful in relation to the library’s shelving schemes: on many occasions, it will be possible to retrieve documents similar in content to the one you started with.

These titles are also clickable, allowing you to gradually expand your search.
